A tail section or a nose fairing that has already been painted and grained can be assembled only once. A grained surface cannot be touched up: if the assembly goes wrong, the part is not recoverable — it is scrapped. At MPT, these components — destined for the assembly of sports motorcycles — are handled personally by Stefania Bassi, head of the assembly department.
Here they call her the live wire, the one who makes a racket, because her ringing voice brings energy and good humor to the department. But she turns dead serious when it comes to parts that allow no second attempt.
Stefania joined MPT in May 1993, at 19, straight out of school. And she has never left since.
“I arrived at nineteen. I grew up in here, I learned the trade and I became a department head. And I’ll only leave, I hope, when I retire!”
She assembles, corrects defects using vibration, ultrasonic and hot-blade welding, fits screws and spacers finished by hand. And she re-inspects the components arriving from the molding department that have already been checked: a second pass, inspection sheet in hand, to catch non-conformities before they turn into a problem. She plans hand in hand with molding and coordinates a team of five.
There is also one operation that today, in the department, only she sees through to the end: the “trombette” — the little trumpets, as she has come to call them affectionately after years of production runs — right- and left-hand components for Ducati Corse. Three parts to be welded, in sequence, to the tightest dimensional accuracy.
But after more than thirty years, the most delicate part is still this one: polishing and finishing. Machines take the component up to a certain point. The last step, on the painted and grained surface, is done by her hand.
